ABSTRACT:
Alcoholism is a worldwide problem not confined either to developed or to developing countries. The present study was aimed to assess the effectiveness of structured teaching programme on level of knowledge regarding alcohol abuse among adolescents at selected nursing college in Jammu. The objectives of the study were to assess the existing level of knowledge regarding alcohol abuse among adolescents, to assess the effectiveness of structured teaching program and to find the association between the levels of knowledge regarding alcohol abuse with their selected socio demographic variables. Research hypothesis were formulated to find the effectiveness of structured teaching programme. A quantitative approach, Pre experimental (one-group pretest posttest) design was used in the study. 50 samples were selected using random sampling technique. The data was collected by using a self-structured questionnaire. The responses were analyzed by using descriptive and inferential statistics. Out of 50 samples, 94% had below average, 6% had average and none of them had above average level of knowledge in pretest while in posttest 20% had below average, 76% had average and 4% had above average level of knowledge. The mean percentage score in pretest was 7.06 and standard deviation was 2.24 and the mean post test score was 11.58 and standard deviation was 2.03. The obtained ‘t’ value was 13.36 which was highly significant at 0.05 level. There was no significant association found between the levels of knowledge regarding alcohol abuse with selected socio demographic variables.

INTRODUCTION:
A habit is a routine of behavior that is repeated regularly and tends to occur. The American Journal of Psychology, (1903) defines a ‘Habit from the standpoint of Psychology, a more or less fixed way of thinking, willing, or feeling acquired through previous repetition of a mental experience’. A bad habit is a negative behavior pattern. Dependency on alcohol is also a bad habit. Alcoholism refers to the use of alcoholic beverages to the point of causing damage to the individual, society or both. Alcohol is a clear colored liquid with a strong burning taste.
The rate of absorption of alcohol into the blood stream is more rapid than its elimination. A small amount of alcohol is excreted through urine and small amount is exhaled. A concentration of 80-100mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood is considered intoxication. A person with 200-250mg will be toxic, sleepy and confuse. If the level is 300mg per 100ml of blood the person may lose consciousness. A concentration of 500mg per 100ml is fatal. According to WHO– In India, Indians consumed 2.4liters of alcohol in 2005, which increased to 4.3 liters in 2010 and scaled up to 5.7 liters in 2016. States with the high prevalence of alcohol use are Chhattisgarh [35.6%], Tripura [34.7%], and Punjab [28.5%]. An overwhelming majority of alcohol users are males, fall in the age group of 18 to 49 years [74%].
REVIEW OF LITERATURE:
The review of literature was done and organized based on literature related to the knowledge and practice of alcohol abuse, prevalence of alcohol abuse and effectiveness of structured teaching programme on knowledge regarding alcohol abuse.
Reny Thomas (2018) conducted a descriptive study to assess the level of knowledge regarding alcoholism and its hazards among adolescents in the selective school of Patiala. The sample study comprised of total 60 students of Buddha Dal Public School of Patiala. The tool used for the study was structured questionnaire. The data was analyzed by descriptive and inferential statistics methods. The significant finding was 63% of students were having average knowledge were as 27% and 10% had poor and good knowledge respectively 4.
Lamyaa Ben El Jilali et al., (2020) conducted a cross sectional study on prevalence of alcohol consumption and alcohol use disorders among middle and high school students in the province of Khemisset, Morocco. The study revealed that prevalence of alcohol drinking among students aged 12 – 14 years old was 1.6% and 15 – 18 years old was 9.7% and over 18 years old was 15.6%3.
Gopi D, S.Deepa (2017) conducted a pre-experimental study. The study was carried out at Chova Higher secondary school at Kannur among higher school boys. The sample comprised of 100 students. Sample was selected by using convenient sampling technique. The data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The mean pre-test score of knowledge of adolescent boys is 10.27 with a standard deviation of 3.77. So there is a need for structured teaching programme on alcohol abuse for adolescent boys. While the post-tests scores regarding knowledge is 15.9091. The result of this study showed that the knowledge of adolescent boys regarding alcohol abuse was significantly increased after attending structured teaching programme on alcohol abuse 5.

DISCUSSION:
The results of this study was consistent with the study conducted by Dinesh Kumar and Harimati Huidrom on knowledge regarding substance abuse among higher secondary school students at Hassan district, Karnataka6.
RECOMMENDATIONS:
The study can be replicated with major distinct.
1. A comparative study can be conducted to assess the knowledge level of nursing students and other grades of college students.
2. A comparative study can be conducted to assess the knowledge levels of rural and urban adolescents.
3. The same study can be replicated with large sample sizes.
4. The same study can be conducted as an experimental approach by assigning control group.
5. A study can be conducted in different community settings.
